Morning sickness affects up to 80 per cent of pregnant women. It normally only lasts for the first trimester but it can be quite debilitating. It may even lead to hospitalisation. But expectant mums now have a drug free option that can help stop them reaching for the bucket.
The biggest myth about morning sickness is that it only affects women in the mornings. Some women have to deal with the nausea and vomiting 24 hours a day and for the entire pregnancy, although this is not that common, thankfully.
In Severe cases, when regular vomiting occurs, dehydration ensues and a condition called hyperemeses gravidarum can develop, this needs urgent medical treatment and usually hospitalisation.
Due to being pregnant it is obviously impossible to test drugs for morning sickness without risking the health of the unborn child. With all the publicity that still surrounds the use of Thalidomide, there is little available to treat morning sickness effectively.
Acupuncuture can help!
Many studies have shown acupuncture to be effective in the relief of morning sickness. The most common acupuncture point used in the wrist. This point known as PC6 or just P6 is probably the most researched of all acupuncture points. Nausea of all types using these points including, post operative nausea and nausea due to chemotherapy.
In all the studies there have not been any reports of any side effects to endanger the unborn child.
